Confess your sin

As I was reading through the book of Joshua the other day, I came across Achan’s sin, found in chapter 7. After Joshua had been told by God that someone in their camp had sinned, and cause them defeat at the hand of Ai, Joshua went through the people, finally singling out Achan as the culprit. As I was looking at the passage where Joshua confronted Achan about his sin against Israel and most of all God, something stood out to me. In verse 19 Joshua said to Achan, “…“My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel and give praise to him. And tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

The thing that stood out to me was not that Joshua was calling Achan to confess his sins, that makes sense. No, the thing that stood out to me was that Joshua was calling Achan to worship God. He called Achan to give glory to God and praise Him by telling Joshua what he had done.

This was strange to me, even though it shouldn’t be, because I am not used to thinking of the act of confession as an act of worship. Which is probably why I don’t confess as much as I should and why I don’t call others to confess their sins. The great thing about this is if we think our worship with God is dead, or dull, we now can see that we have ample opportunities to worship God daily. All we must do is be honest with ourselves and confess our sins unto God!

Fed up with “The Sinner”

Here is a helpful set of questions for pastors, or really anyone who interacts with sinful people (which is all of us) on a regular basis. It comes from Philip Ryken (books | kindle) Loving the way Jesus Loves.

Then consider the way that you have treated other people. Are you fed up with “the sinner” in your life? Are you sympathetic with his sinful weakness, or are you secretly glad that you do not have the problems he has or give in to the temptations he faces? Have you given up on what God can do in another sinner’s life? And what is your attitude toward people who are poor and needy? Are you inclined to think that they are responsible for their own predicament and therefore undeserving of your mercy? These are all things that love would never do, because it refuses to rejoice in wrongdoing. (pg. 72)
