Soul DVD Interview and Giveaway

December 14, 2010

For those of you who have read this blog you will know that I am a big fan of the Christianity Explored and the Soul DVD. I did a review a couple months ago and since that time I have had 4 different groups of students either go through it or are going through it. About a month ago I connected with Brad at The Good Book Company and asked him if he could connect me with the guys who did the Soul DVD and helped rewrite the CY booklet. Not only did I get connected with Nate but Brad said he would be willing to give me 5 copies of the Soul DVD to giveaway to you!

Below you will find an interview I did with Nate about the Soul DVD, CY Christianity Explored and being in youth ministry.

1. Can you introduce yourself to my readers. A little about your family, ministry background, where you are in ministry now.
My name is Nathan James Hampden Morgan Locke. Or Nate. In 1982 I was born into a fantastic Christian family and thankfully was allowed to stay! Having Christian parents is a great privilege and one that is often unappreciated for many years. However, through my sinfulness the great teaching and example I was given served to produce pride in me. In my teenage years I saw Christians as ‘right but dull’ and my non-Christian friends as ‘wrong but exciting’. My purpose for living was to show others just how amazing I was, even convincing myself that I occasionally succeeded! While at University God gently took me to one side and explained again that actually my purpose for living was to show others how amazing Jesus is. In fact he gave me a fairly good kicking. My wife (who was strangely involved in the good kicking!) and I have been married for 5 years, she is fantastic and we have a son who is nearly a year old. I’ve been working at the All Souls Clubhouse in central London for the past 6 years.

2. Whats on your ipod? [sermons and/or music]
I don’t really listen to sermons on the go, since most of the guys I’d listen to are dead! In terms of music though I love Johnny Cash. I also often find myself listening to The Smiths, and bands like The Foo Fighters, The Killers, Kings of Leon. Though having said that I’ve just checked my most played and it includes Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5!

John Calvin, John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, Aiden Tozer, Paris Reidhead, Leonard Ravenhill. Also Mark Prentice is the vicar at the All Souls Clubhouse; I have a lot of time for him too.

3. How did you get involved with Christianity Explored?
I was basically looking for something to keep me busy when not at the Clubhouse and they very kindly said they’d keep me occupied!

4. The production of Soul DVD was first class and I have had a bunch of students love the videos somuch they wanted to buy their own; what was the greatest part of filming and producing the DVD?
Having the opportunity to write a sermon visually is really cool, but the best thing was working with talented people. From those who edited the scripts to the guy who pointed the camera everyone involved is incredibly good at what they do.

5. As you were working through the Soul DVD and CY, what was the hardest part of writing it?
Great question, I think the hardest thing was working with talented people!

6. What is your hope with Soul and CY for this generation?
That God uses it for His glory as a vessel of His grace and mercy to bring people to saving knowledge of Jesus. I know that’s the answer I’m supposed to give give but I can’t think of anything else and the more I look at the answer I’m supposed to give, the more it looks like the greatest, stupidest and most wonderful thing that anything could be used for.

7. What has the responses been to the study?
The responsive has been overwhelmingly positive.  Some people say it’s a bit dark and serious, but we chose to make it that way on purpose.

8. Do you have any plans for future studies?
It was fantastic to make Soul and brilliant to give the CY course a refresh. People are excited to use it and many using it are seeing fruit, however we don’t want to create a dependency on materials and really want Church members to teach the Bible themselves. It’s a tricky situation. There is a fantastic course on Philippians called Discipleship Explored (including a DVD) which is already available. Though not originally intended for teenagers, I’d advise people to use that.

9. What is the hardest part in your ministry to students?
Tough question! I’m really not sure, but I think it probably finds its root in my sinfulness. Aside from that, the most painful thing is watching teenagers dropping out of Church. I know some people say younger people are more honest, so they won’t live the lie of a lot of unsaved adults within the Church, but it still hurts.

10. As you have now written the Soul DVD and CY what has been the hardest lesson that you have had to apply to your own life for the study?
These are annoyingly difficult questions! The Soul DVD and the CY course hope to be a faithful presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the the hardest lesson of that gospel is grace. It sounds paradoxical because you’d think receiving grace would be the easiest thing in the world, but in practice we’re so hard-wired to sin that accepting grace and continuing to live by grace goes against everything we naturally feel. A man with leprosy came to him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” That’s the hardest lesson.

Thanks Josh for the heads up! The Good Book co. is good stuff! I met the guys during T4G I think it was and was sufficiently blessed! Wasn’t aware of this DVD but if it is anything like Christianity Explored or some of the other Christ-centered products they produce it will be an excellent resource. I am currently leading a new ministry in our church entitled ReBuild meant for those who desperately need to start new and under Christ. I cant help but think this would be a great resource to share with this ministry. If a free copy comes my way PTL! and Thank you!! If not it still looks like one I need to add to next years budget.nThanks for what you’re doing in Maine and NE… my NE brother!n

The folks at TGBC are top-notch. Great organization. They put out one of the few devotionals I recommend.

We’ve been using Soul this semester at the Church of the Advent in Birmingham. I recommend it. Awesome conceptual progression and very good interaction with the scriptures.

Yeah we have four or five groups going through it, and they LOVE it! How have the students liked it? Have you seen growth or conversion from it? Would love some feedback on what you have learned form it.

I purchased Soul at Lead 2010 to use at my church. Great Interview and I have also heard great reviews from not only Josh but from others who are currently using it. I think the best review was from a 12 year small group leader. Josh thanks for the resources!

Yeah he is a unique kid that is for sure. Have you used it in a ‘study’ format yet, or not? Would love to know what your students thought about it…
